Prince rumors abound in advance of Revolution reunion gig

by Andrea Swensson

February 16, 2012

Back around the time that Prince crashed the Current's fifth birthday party in early 2010, it seemed like we couldn't go a month without hearing another purple rumor. In recent years, Prince chatter has simmered down to a quiet murmur on the homefront, with the Purple One devoting his time to touring the East Coast, California, and Canada rather than randomly dropping in on events in the Twin Cities. But this week, the Prince rumor mill is firing up once again as fans are speculating that he might show up at this Sunday's Revolution reunion at First Avenue after hearing that he had dinner with Revolution drummer Bobby Z at the Dakota on Valentine's Day.

Though Z told Jon Bream at the Star Tribune that the meet-up was "just old friends having dinner," it's encouraging to hear that Prince is in town and in good spirits with his old bandmate. Larry Graham and his wife were also present at the Valentine's Day gathering, which took place at a show by the Steeles. Super-fansite Prince.org is already wondering if Graham, Prince, and the Revolution will jam during either the benefit show or another venue in town this week.

Sunday night's show is a benefit for the American Heart Association, and Bobby Z hopes the high-profile reunion will raise awareness of heart issues; he was hospitalized in critical condition early last year after suffering a heart attack. The reunion will feature Z's Revolution bandmates Wendy & Lisa, Brownmark, Dr. Fink, Dez Dickerson, and Eric Leeds (not to mention an afterparty DJed by Questlove), and is sure to be a historic evening -- regardless of whether the Purple One decides to attend or perform.
