The Cactus Blossoms settle into Monday night residency at the Turf Club

by Andrea Swensson

February 13, 2012

Once upon a time, the Turf Club was home to a recurring Monday night gig in the basement's Clown Lounge, hosted by improvisational trio Fat Kid Wednesdays. That residency ended up spanning over 13 years and became a gathering place for a new generation of jazz fans, friends, and Turf regulars. It may seem overly simple, but it's remarkable just how quickly a new community can spring up around something like a weekly residency -- which is why I'm especially excited that a new group, classic country band the Cactus Blossoms, will be taking over Monday nights at the Turf starting tonight. A new era starts now.

A quick primer: the Cactus Blossoms is centered around songwriting brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum, who currently front a five-piece ensemble live. Their debut album, The Cactus Blossoms, was released last fall, and earned a nod from country cable channel CMT for being one of the "10 Overlooked Albums of 2011." You can sample the whole thing in the streaming widget below, and check them out live at the Turf starting tonight. Doors open at 9 p.m.
