Friday Five: Haley Bonar, El Le Faunt, Vision the Kid, and more

by Andrea Swensson

April 27, 2012

This weekend is jam-packed with local CD-release shows, so instead of the usual grab-bag of videos, we're going to dedicate all five items to artists putting out new releases in the coming weeks. Take a gander at what's in store tonight and tomorrow night...

1. Haley Bonar drops free EP

Just in time for her gig at the Cedar tonight with Peter Wolf Crier, Haley Bonar has released an EP via NoiseTrade. It features four tracks off her excellent latest full-length, Golder, in addition to a remix of her song "Carelessly" by Dosh.

2. Teague Alexy has This Dance

Fans of Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank will likely recognize Teague Alexy, who is breaking out with a solo album tonight at the 331 Club. He'll also be in Duluth tomorrow night celebrating This Dance at Tycoon's. Check out the video for one of his new songs, "Riding on a Ferris Wheel," here.

3. El Le Faunt bring their vaudeville pop to Amsterdam

I've been intrigued by this act ever since catching them live last fall at the Ritz Theater. Fronted by theatrical, growling frontman Thomas Maddux, El Le Faunt seem to have been transported from another time and place; perhaps they spent a past life gigging as the house band at Moulin Rouge. Read more about their new album, Ten in One, on Gimme Noise, and see them tomorrow night at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall with All the Pretty Horses and brand-new act The Deceitful Lapwings.

4. Lovely Dark go to Hell

There are a lot of bands doing the dual-drummer thing in town these days (think Poliça, Marijuana Deathsquads), but Lovely Dark take a decidedly sparser, Latin-influenced approach to their percussion section. The new sextet will release their debut album, Territories, at Hell's Kitchen tomorrow night with Speed's the Name, Hunting Club, and Big Lake -- and given that this video from Radio K was their first public performance ever, it seems like their new songs will be a pleasure to take in live.

5. Vision the Kid brings The Comedown to Honey

With his debut album, Lost Summer, still sitting in the new release bin (it was released this past November), Vision the Kid is already back with another EP. He's celebrating the EP, The Comedown, tomorrow night at Honey, and posted the first single, "Lost Generation," on his site. Listen to the track, which features guest vocalist K. Raydio, below.
