November 26, 2013

Atmosphere, Seven’s Travels (10th Anniversary Edition)

Ten years after the album's original release, Rhymesayers Entertainment presents a new incarnation of Atmosphere’s Seven’s Travels, available now in stores and online. Released on two white vinyl discs and featuring the original cover design, the legendary local rap duo’s fourth official album is also accompanied by a disc including three bonus songs, two b-side releases, the hidden track “Say Shh...” (the first song ever played on the Current), and two additional tracks recorded in 2003. Totaling a whopping 27 songs and over 85 minutes of play time, this reissue offers something for longtime Atmosphere fans and first-time listeners alike.

Cruel Love, Cruel Love EP

Cruel Love, a burgeoning seven-piece electronic band, have crafted a debut EP that combines dark and whimsical sounds in an auto-tuned, down-tempo package. These deliciously weird and ambient tunes include “I Am the Airplane,” which reflects on destructive relationships; and “Zombie Love Song,” which follows star-crossed post-apocalyptic lovers. The five-song EP was released at the group’s November 25 CD release show at the Triple Rock Social Club, where the group played alongside Dream Crusher—with whom Cruel Love share five members—and La Manchita. The EP is also available for download on Cruel Love’s Bandcamp page.

Minneapolis-based Korda Records, a “cooperative label among friends,” are back for a second annual Korda Kompilation, featuring eight brand new tracks and four previously released tracks by Typsy Panthre, Jim Ruiz Four, the Ocean Blue, the Owls, the Starfolk, and the Hang Ups. Korda’s like-minded artists evoke a Parisian, 60s-inspired aesthetic, a pop sound often reminiscent of the Beatles or the Magnetic Fields. The compilation will be released in conjunction with the Korda Records showcase on November 30 at the Cedar. Korda 2 Komp is a fun, highly listenable introduction to this local label.

Very Small Animal, Port of Call

Since their formation as a two-person collaboration in 2010, bouncy folk-rock group Very Small Animal have added three members to their roster and more layers to their sound. Their debut LP, Port of Call, is carried by assertive percussion, twangy guitars, and gorgeous harmonies. The album is an enjoyable, hooky product of a group growing into their sound. Very Small Animal will be releasing Port of Call at an LP release show at Icehouse on November 30. The show will also feature performances by DJ Tickle Torture and Red Daughters.
