Sifu Hotman is a relatively new group on the block, though its members are anything but. The new super group comprises Rhymesayers rapper Dem Atlas, spoken word artist and rapper Guante, and producer Rube. Their debut project Embrace the Sun will be next Tuesday. If you don’t have the patience to wait to hear the debut, the release show will be at Intermedia Arts this Friday. The trio will have vinyl copies available at the show, which will also feature solo performances by all three members.
Similarly, Tropical Depression are a new group with veteran members. To create these summery tunes, Vicious Vicious and Tapes ‘n Tapes member Erik Appelwick enlisted some help from James Buckley, Adam Krinksy, and fellow Vicious Vicious member Martin Dosh. According to a press release that may or may not be entirely literal, “The album is an outrageous odyssey and celebration of debauchery and nautical adventure recorded on a yacht called The Avtomatik.” You can raise anchor at will: the album is out now.
Though his new single “is actually a summer jam,” says Mark Mallman in a press release, “it’s actually the result of cabin fever. My friends and I would stay inside dancing all night from to anything from ‘Miss You’ to ‘Ashes to Ashes.’ Then, the next day, I’d wake up around 3 p.m., down a gallon of water and ibuprofen, and start writing songs based off of what we were partying to. ‘Monster Movies’ came out of those sessions.”
