Today’s Music News: Alt-J and Royal Blood lead Brit Awards nominations

Nominations have been announced for the 2015 Brit Awards, commonly called the British Grammys. Contending for the British Group award are Alt-JRoyal BloodColdplayOne Direction, and Clean Bandit; Alt-J and Royal Blood are also nominated for British Album of the Year, along with Sam SmithGeorge Ezra, and Ed Sheeran. The awards will be presented at the O2 Arena in London on Feb. 25. (NMEFKA Twigs (nominated for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act) performed at the nomination ceremony:

It’s the end of the road for the Black Crowes, says guitarist Rich Robinson, who blames the demands of his brother, frontman Chris Robinson. “I love my brother and respect his talent but his present demand that I must give up my equal share of the band and that our drummer for 28 years and original partner, Steve Gorman, relinquish 100% of his share, reducing him to a salaried employee, is not something I could agree to.” This makes the third time calling it quits for the Black Crowes: they formed in 1989, then broke up in 2002, then came back, then “went on hiatus” in 2010, then came back again. Rivers Cuomo of Weezer has no idea why he keeps receiving fan mail apparently meant for Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd. It’s unclear whether someone just has the wrong address or if the seemingly misdirected mail is a long-running prank. (SPIN)

First Aid Kit covered R.E.M.‘s “Walk Unafraid” for the soundtrack of last year’s acclaimed film Wild. R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck visited the set of the music video for the song and joined the duo for an acoustic take on the 1998 song that was inspired by words of encouragement Patti Smith gave to Michael Stipe. Mariah Carey is heading to Vegas, and she’s going to stay for a while: the pop star, the third-bestselling female artist of all time (behind Barbra Streisand and Madonna), has booked two runs of shows this coming May and July at Caesars Palace. The Caesars Palace residence was formerly held down by Celine Dion, who has put her career on hiatus to care for her ailing husband. (Rolling Stone)

At 43, Snoop Dogg is a grandfather. The rapper’s son Corde Broadus and Corde’s wife Jessica Kyzer are the parents of a new baby named Zion. Snoop’s next album, Bush, was produced by Pharrell and is set for release in March. (NME)

In the next animated Batman film, the voice of villain the Dollmaker will be provided by “Weird Al” Yankovic. (Consequence of Sound)
