Sorry, Bob: Billboard names Prince Minnesota’s most iconic star

by Sadie Bell

July 02, 2015

In honor of the 4th of July, Billboard created a feature highlighting the "Top 50 Stars of the 50 States," and Prince got the nod for Minnesota. The article also mentioned Bob Dylan, but ultimately Prince took Minnesota's title because he's shown his home state a lot more love - most famously filming Purple Rain in Minneapolis, helping to turn First Avenue into an internationally known music landmark.

While Billboard included obvious picks like Bruce Springsteen for New Jersey and Billy Joel for New York, they included a couple other interesting picks. Like, did you know Eminem of Detroit fame actually grew up in Missouri until he was 12? Fleetwood Mac, a British band, took honors for Arizona just because Stevie Nicks is from Phoenix. Billboard also described our neighbor South Dakota as "not a hot bed of Hot 100 activity," naming Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum their Top Star.

When it comes to Minnesota, though, Prince takes the crown. Should the title have gone to Hibbing's hometown hero Bob Dylan, despite his move to New York City? Or to indie-rockers the Replacements? Or to someone else?
