For the past few months, The Current has been inviting local musicians to take over our all-Minnesota music stream to talk about the local music scene and to share tracks from other local artists. 2015’s roster for Local Current’s DJ in Residence included Sophia Eris, Gabriel Douglas, Mark Mallman, Reina del Cid, and many others. It’s time to kick off the new year with the latest addition! In the month of January, we will be handing the mic over to Kerry Alexander, frontwoman and songwriter of Bad Bad Hats.
Bad Bad Hats formed when Alexander paired up with Chris Hoge as a songwriting duo while studying at Macalester College in St. Paul, and later filled out the group’s sound with the addition of bassist Noah Boswell. Drawing influence from the pop sensibilities and songwriting of female pop musicians of the 1990s, Alexander sets sweetly poignant lyrics against danceable, hooky arrangements. 2015 was a banner year for this indie-rock trio, who received an abundance of critical praise for Psychic Reader, appeared multiple times as a listener favorite in The Current’s Top 89 poll (with “Midway” ranking #6), were chosen as 2015’s top “Picked to Click” band by City Pages, and went on a number of national tours throughout the year. They’ll kick off 2016 by helping The Current celebrate its 11th Birthday at First Avenue on Friday, Jan. 22, along with Bones & Beeker, Mixed Blood Majority, John Mark Nelson, and Low!
“It is so exciting to be Local Current’s January DJ in residence, I can’t even tell you,” writes Kerry Alexander of her new gig. “I had a radio show all through college that was my pride and joy. I miss it and I can’t wait to get back behind the mic and share the music I love with the people I love. (I know you’re listening, Mom!) I’m looking forward to playing songs from all the amazing local bands that have inspired me over the years, and I’m hoping to discover some new music while I’m at it. I can’t think of a better way to start out my 2016. Put me in, coach!”
Spend your Friday afternoons with Kerry Alexander of Bad Bad Hats, delving into music made, played, and enjoyed in Minnesota: every Friday in January from noon until 6:00 p.m. on Local Current.
