Eric Mayson, Local Current’s DJ in Residence, has something special up his sleeve

by Kelsey

February 05, 2016

Since last May, The Current has been inviting local musicians to take over our all-Minnesota music stream to talk about the local music scene and to share tracks from their favorite local artists. So far, the roster for Local Current’s DJ in Residence has included Sophia Eris, Gabriel Douglas, Mark Mallman, Kerry Alexander, and many others. Taking the reins in February will be multi-instrumentalist — and local collaborator extraordinaire — Eric Mayson!

Although he was born in Texas, Mayson brought his lifelong love of music to Minnesota at the age of 16 and has since made a definite mark on the local scene. He’s produced and played in local hip-hop group Crunchy Kids; been a member of Caroline Smith’s band; has worked with the likes of Lizzo, Doomtree, Toki Wright, and Big Cats; and even composed and directed a number of musicals.

2015 saw the release of Mayson’s first solo record, Detail, which was met with praise from critics and fans alike. Mayson finished third in City Pages' Picked to Click poll, Detail was voted one of the ten best local albums of the year in the Star Tribune's Twin Cities Critics Tally, and Mayson was featured in First Avenue's annual Best New Bands showcase.

“I’m very excited to be Local Current’s DJ in Residence because these are completely uncharted waters for me,” says Mayson. “I’ve never worked in radio, nor have I ever really DJed anything, so I'm excited to see how this goes! I also look forward to hearing a ton of new Minnesota music, and continuing to be amazed by our community.”

Eric Mayson’s residency on Local Current begins today at noon with an radio drama of sorts, written by Eric himself. Follow along as he recovers from amnesia and discovers his identity through…local music! And be sure to mark your calendars to spend your Friday delving deep into the music made, played, and enjoyed in Minnesota with Eric Mayson on Local Current.
