Welcome Mina Moore, Local Current’s September DJ in Residence

by Kelsey

September 02, 2016

Now in its second year, Local Current’s DJ in Residence program is an opportunity for The Current to invite local musicians to take over our all-Minnesota music stream and share their favorite stories and music from the local music scene. So far, Local Current’s DJ in Residence roster has included Eric Mayson, Danielle Cusack (Bruise Violet), Sophia Eris, Mark Mallman, and many others. Taking the reins in September is singer-songwriter Mina Moore.

Mina Moore hails from Minneapolis and began her music career as early as middle school, when she joined her first band, the Sugar Divas. Today, her music is infused with sounds from those formative years and she leans heavily on the genres of soul, R&B, and pop. Moore has been immersed in the Minnesota music scene as a busy collaborator, forming Dear Data with Al Church in 2014 and singing frequently with other local favorites like Caroline Smith and Eric Mayson.

Recently, Moore has shifted focus to leading her own project, and she and her band have opened for some of their greatest influences — including Hiatus Kaiyote, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Morris Day and the Time. She notes that her palette is ever growing, with her live performances aiming to educate as much as entertain. Since winning a songwriting contest through Minneapolis-based recording studio Humans Win! in 2015, Moore has been working on recording her debut solo album, set to release later this fall.

“I’m an 80s baby, so I spent plenty of time listening to the radio growing up,” reflects Moore before taking the mic on Local Current. “My neighbor friend and I even made our own radio programs (to be heard solely for our families, of course). The invitation to be on air, particularly in my hometown, is truly a dream come true.”

Spend your Friday afternoons diving deep into the Minnesota music scene with Mina Moore: every Friday in September from noon to 6 p.m. on Local Current!
