Monday, August 20

Upstate
Cause Spirits & Soundbar, Minneapolis

Upstate have been gigging frequently around town after the release of their debut The Breeze and The Brandy, and patrons at Cause can expect some fresh material as the band releases new singles on their Bandcamp. With El Drifte and His Restless Hearts and The Bootstrap Family Band.
 

Tuesday, August 21

Bob Dylan
Mayo Civic Center, Rochester 
7:30 p.m., $49.50-$55, all ages 
Minnesota's most famous expat returns to the homeland for the first of two area shows; he'll be in the Twin Cities to play the Xcel Energy Center November 7. Expect plenty of new material at this Rochester gig, as he's got a new one, Tempest, on the way this September.
 

Wednesday, August 22

Prissy Clerks with Wolf Mountain, France Camp, Teenage Strangler

A great bill has been assembled for this show over on the West Bank. It features Best New Bands winner Prissy Clerks, who are hard at work on a new record, and the grungy sounds of burgeoning Hopkins high-school band Wolf Mountain. Throw in former Howler bassist France Camp and his crew and and Howler-approved Teenage Strangler, and the night should be a raucous one. 
 

Thursday, August 23

The Minnesota State Fair
State Fairgrounds, Falcon Heights
$10-$12 entry fee, all ages
Yes, it's that time again! 89.3 The Current's residency at the Great Minnesota Get-Together kicks off Thursday with very special musical guests Dawes, who will be stopping by the booth on the corner of Judson and Nelson at 4 p.m. to perform and chat with Mary Lucia. It's one of many great live sessions planned at the fair this year; see the Current's full schedule of guests here.

Puppies & Trains

Superhopper returns! Kind of. Kermit Carter is back with a new project and a few familiar bandmates for his latest project, Puppies & Trains. Check 'em out live with support from the Right Here, Panther Ray, and Apocalypse Meow.

The free weekly series presents its penultimate lineup: indie rock band Greycoats, singer-songwriter Martin Devaney, and raunchy comedian and singer Courtney McLean and the Dirty Curls.

S. Carey

Another freebie, this time in South Minneapolis: Bon Iver's drummer, S. Carey, returns to the Twin Cities for a presentation of his excellent solo material, which ranges from chamber pop to neo-folk with electronic undertones. Carey's performances will be followed by a screening of the Coen brothers classic O Brother, Where Art Thou?

A. Wolf and Her Claws Vinyl Release Party
7th St. Entry, Minneapolis
8 p.m., $8 adv/$10 door, 18+
Aby Wolf's latest album, the avant-electronic A. Wolf and Her Claws, gets a re-release on wax. With openers Basuketto, Omac Monatainya, and DJ Makr (Mark McGee of Basuketto, Father You See Queen, Votel).

Hymie Records Roadshow
331 Club, Minneapolis
10 p.m., free, 21+
The Twin Cities go-to record shop for the old and obscure, Hymie Records is bringing a sampling of their catalogue to the 331 Club for a special concert and shopping events. Lonesome DJ Dave and DJ Laurax will spin tunes inbetween sets by Brian Just Band and Very Small Animal.
 

Saturday, August 25

Apollo Cobra
Franconia Sculpture Park, Franconia Township

Woody McBride's curated 3-D Music series continues this week with Apollo Cobra, whose single "Motherland" has been in rotation lately on the Current. Word has it this gig, situated about an hour northeast of the Twin Cities, will be the last chance to see Apollo live until November. With openers Michael Paul Duo.

MunQs, Soul Tree, Dandylion Warpaint, Vienna

From the Facebook event description: "A portion of the proceeds will go to The Wildcat Sanctuary to promote their natural sanctuary for wild cats in need and inspire change to end the captive wildlife crisis." Not only is this a chance to see the excellent live, funky dance band MunQs perform live, but it's for a great cause. I mean, just look at this flyer:

Sing Out for Kids: Hosted by Dessa
Hell's Kitchen, Minneapolis

Dessa curates a stellar lineup for an intimate fundraising concert, which will feature performances by Jeremy Messersmith, Toki Wright, Gabe Douglas (The 4onthefloor), Taj Raj, Robert Robinson, and Caroline Smith with Jesse Schuster. Proceeds will benefit the Southside Family Nurturing Center, an educational center hand-picked by Dessa for its positive impact on the community.
