Listen: Sean Anonymous teams up with DJ Name, Phillip Morris and Lizzo for new 7″

by Andrea Swensson

December 30, 2013

In preparation for his annual birthday bash—and his biggest headlining show yet—at First Avenue next Saturday, rapper Sean Anonymous shipped over a pair of brand new tracks off a new 7" he's releasing with DJ Name.

This year marks the seventh in a row that Sean has celebrated his birthday by playing a show, and each year the event seems to grow larger and larger. This year, the gig—which he's calling "Make Some Noise"—will mark his first time headlining First Ave's Mainroom, and it comes on the heels of a busy 2013 that was spent playing block parties and stages around town with his frequent collaborators, improvisational psych band Dream Crusher.

Proceeds from the show and the sale of Sean Anonymous and DJ Name's new 7" will go to the Twin Cities Community Music Trust, a fund set up by employees at First Avenue that helps cover the cost of health care for musicians and industry workers in need.

Side A of the new 7" is "Cold Shoulder," a track Sean Anonymous and DJ Name created with Lizzo. As she raps "I don't care, I wrote this verse in the time it takes me to press my hair," the guest rapper proves once again why she's so deserving of all the attention she's received this year, and she acts as a fiery counterpoint to Sean's meditative hook.

And the B-side of the new 7" features guest MC Phillip Morris, a Chicago-born rapper who recently made the move to Minneapolis. As the title of the track suggests, "Sultan of Swat" finds both artists swinging for the fences over a boisterous, guitar-driven beat; at times, the two rappers mirror each other's styles so effectively it's hard to discern which one is taking his turn at the mic.

Sean Anonymous will perform on the Current's Local Show this Sunday night, January 5, and will headline Make Some Noise next Saturday, January 11, at First Avenue with DJ Name, Dream Crusher, and openers Toki Wright and Big Cats, Dem Atlas, and Enemy Planes.
