Friday Five: Art-a-Whirl edition
May 16, 2014
For the past four years, we've aligned Minnesota Music Day, (where we play nothing but local musicians on The Current) with the Saturday of Art-a-Whirl weekend. So what better way to synch things up than to pick some unseen videos of folks headlining (or just playing) the various stages around town. It's called synergy, people. Get into it.
Marijuana Deathsquads - Ewok Sadness
Marijuana Deathsqauds are headlining Anchor Fish and Chips stage on Saturday. This video was recorded by our friends at NPR Music, who produced this video of "Ewok Sadness" from a live session at the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C.
Bomba De Luz - Be Minor
Lydia Hoglund will kick off 612 Brew Art-a-Whirl Bash at noon on Saturday. Hoglund's list of associated acts keeps expanding, but Bomba de Luz was her first band, and it's thrilling to start hearing cuts of their sophomore album (out August 5). Here's the brand new video for the lead single "Be Minor."
The Chambermaids - China Blue
The Chambermaids are headlining the "First Avenue" stage at Indeed Brewing Friday night. Here's a version of "China Blue" from a recent stop at Radio K.
Black-eyed Snakes - Bo Diddley
Of the many Alan Sparhawk side-proejcts, Black-eyed Snakes are consistently the most elusive -- and entertaining. Catch them at the Indeed Brewing "First Avenue" stage on Saturday. Maybe they'll toss in a cover, like this invigorating version of "Bo Diddley."
Black Diet - Slow it Down
Speaking of invigorating, you just gotta see Black Diet. They played on the Local Show a few weeks ago, and this version of "Slow it Down" is still going through our ears here. They play Sunday at the 331.
