Friday Five: Mike Mictlan, The Japhies, Big Cats!, more

by Andrea Swensson

September 28, 2012

It's another crazy-busy weekend here in the Twin Cities, and we're here to help you set it off in style. Slip on your headphones and soak in some new sights and sounds...

1. Mike Mictlan

Have you downloaded Mike Mictlan's new mixtape yet? Well get on it -- SNAXXX was one of the biggest sneak-attack releases to hit the music scene this week, and it was received so warmly that it skyrocketed up to the  #2 top-seller on Bandcamp's site. Grab it here for free (or name your own price), buy the physical version here, and peep the teaser for the album below.

2. The Japhies

Hot off the presses, this new video from the Japhies for their song "Dark Guitar" was just debuted at the Triple Rock last night. Check it!

3. Big Cats!

We had Big Cats! and his 10-piece hip-hop orchestra in the studios this week to tape a session for the October 7 episode of The Local Show. Conclusion? This release is not only ambitious and sprawling, but the songs are expertly crafted and beautifully composed. Sample the new sounds with this video for the track "One," and be sure to tune in at 6 p.m. on Sunday the 7th for more from this talented producer.

4. Phantom Tails

It's been a spell since we've heard new material from Phantom Tails. According to the band, this track, "Only Your Eyes," is "a celebratory haunting for this transitional phase shift between summer and fall."

5. Pony Trash

A supergroup of sorts, Pony Trash comprises members The Chambermaids, Vampire Hands, Polica, Heavy Deeds, Private Dancer, and Gospel Gossip -- and now their debut EP, Pony Trash, has an official release date. They'll play a release show on November 23 at the Turf Club.
