Cloud Cult debut single ‘1 x 1 x 1’

by Andrea Swensson

January 02, 2013

Cloud Cult debuted a new track today in tandem with an announcement that they would headline the second of two back-to-back Current birthday parties later this month. It's our first chance to survey the sonic landscape of their forthcoming Love, which is due out March 5 on their own Earthology Records, and "1 x 1 x 1" definitely offers a few clues for what to expect from their next full-length.

My first reaction upon hearing this track? It's heavier than Cloud Cult's recent output, and reminds me of their work from the Advice from the Happy Hippopotamus era. Lead singer Craig Minowa's voice has always sounded a little like Blind Melon's Shannon Hoon's, this the way his voice sounds on this track and especially its melodic dissonance hearkens back to that early '90s era of neo-psychedelia.

Sample the track below, and catch them at night two of the Current's birthday party, Saturday, January 19, to hear more material from Love.
