Friday Five: Pert Near Sandstone, Carrie Rodriguez, Total Trash, and more

Happy Friday! The Current is bringing a little Austin, Texas to Minnesota today with their live broadcast from SXSW, featuring Divine Fits, Emmylou Harris, Iron & Wine, and more. In between sets, sample a handful of new videos from some of our local artists—and one honorary Minnesotan, who pays tribute to an area landmark in her new song.

And to customize your own SXSW-in-MN experience, try hopping around to a few of the great shows happening in town tonight.

Pert Near Sandstone

String band Pert Near Sandstone teamed up with director and animator Emily Fritze to create this video for new song “Ship of Fools.” The track will be released as a 7″ on April 2.

Carrie Rodriguez

This one comes to us all the way from Nashville, but the inspiration for the song is right here in Minneapolis. You may recognize Carrie Rodriguez from her frequent collaborations with Romantica and Ben Kyle; here, watch her pay tribute to “Lake Harriet” with help from former Twin Citian Luke Jacobs on guitar and harmonies.

Toki Wright, Kristoff Krane, and Carnage

This song is insane. Does anyone totally get an old-school Busta Rhymes vibe from Toki’s verse? These three talented MCs—Toki Wright, Kristoff Krane, and Carnage—are about to embark on a Short Circuit Tour. Hopefully, this isn’t the only track to come out of their collaboration.

Total Trash

I love the public access TV vibe of this video from punk band Total Trash, who just celebrated the release of their first tape last night at the Entry.

Sample a wintry single from Batteryboy, a collaboration between singer-songwriter Cobey Rouse, singer and violinist Shannon Frid of Cloud Cult, and slide guitar player and keyboardist Eric Carranza that is reminiscent of Cloud Cult’s acoustic work and neo-folkies like Bon Iver. Their album is due out in June.
