Friday Five: Trampled by Turtles announce live album, and #LAAB returns for a fifth season

by Andrea Swensson

October 11, 2013

Happy Friday! Here's a handful of the latest audio-video treasures to pop up in our Minnesota music scene, along with a few newsy items of note...

Trampled by Turtles

It was already considered a monumental occasion when Trampled by Turtles held down three nights at First Avenue this past April to celebrate their 10th anniversary as a band. Now, those live shows will be forever cemented into the band's history thanks to a new live album and concert DVD, Live at First Avenue, plus a corresponding photo book. You can preview the release in the video below, and pre-order the live collection in a variety of packages here.

And the Professors

As October 24 draws nearer I'm getting more and more excited for the release of And the Professors' debut. Led by Adam Levy with support from members of Heiruspecs, Dessa's live band, the Minnesota Opera Orchestra, and others, the group approaches orchestral pop in a way that sounds truly majestic. Sample their sound in this video for the song "We Are," which was recorded at the Pearl Studio in Northeast Minneapolis by Travis Carte.

WILD!!wing

Finally! Now we know what would happen if a show was exclusively attended by dogs.

The Lioness

North Minneapolis rapper the Lioness is one of many talented artists to be featured in the fifth season of Adam Dunn's #LAAB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, and her contribution is one of my favorites from this new batch of videos. Find out more about the Lioness on her website.

Ashley Gold

Another favorite from this season of #LAAB is a new song from Ashley Gold, "Witness," which finds her turning away from her folkie-soul origins and moving closer to hip-hop with help from producer Big Jess.

P.S.

I'd be remiss to skip over this new video from Prince for his song "Breakfast Can Wait," which was directed by and stars young artist Danielle Curiel. (Danielle and her sister Brianna were both at that last-minute Prince gig at Paisley Park last weekend). Get your purple on...
