Friday Five: Lizzo, Chris Koza, BNLX, and more new MN videos
March 07, 2014
Happy Friday! And I mean that, too—the temperature rose above freezing for the first time in what feels like about eight years and the work week is winding down for the 9-to-5ers. We may actually be able to go outside this weekend.
To celebrate (and make that weekend come a little bit faster), slip on your headphones and catch up on the latest local music videos here, including hot new jams from Lizzo, Chris Koza, Minneapolis Sound vet André Cymone, and more.
Lizzo
Lizzo, Har Mar Superstar, Sophia Eris, Astronautalis, and yes, Macauley Culkin star in this dizzying new video for "Faded," one of the cuts off last year's Lazerbeak collab Lizzobangers.
Chris Koza
Filmed last summer on Northern Minnesota's Mallard Island, Chris Koza performs a new song "In Real Time" on a beautiful old upright piano in a beautiful, creaky old cabin stuffed with books and records and people playing chess. The song will appear on Koza's forthcoming solo record, which has yet to get a release date.
ACTN
ACTN's Gus Watkins describes his project as "death-pop," and the black crow in the video certainly helps to convey the death vibe. But it's also incredibly catchy and complex—the horn parts remind me of St. Vincent's collaboration with David Byrne, while his high-pitched croon creeps over the beat to create a sinister aftertaste. "Body Out" is the title track off ACTN's new EP, which is now available on Bandcamp.
BNLX
While we're on the topic of bands with four-letter acronyms for names, BNLX just released a video for their song "Opposites Attract" that was filmed in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where they were recently on tour.
André Cymone
As if I needed any more reason to look forward to André Cymone's big homecoming gig at the 7th St. Entry on March 16 (read more about his new album and place in the Twin Cities scene here), he just released a video for his song "Rock and Roll."
