Friday Five: Haley Bonar, Polica, and more new Minnesota music videos

by Andrea Swensson

June 13, 2014

What's that saying? All killer, no filler? This week's Friday Five practically assembled itself as some of the state's most recognizable and talented artists released one music video after another.

Haley Bonar

Haley Bonar takes the "You will get back on the plane" metaphor literally in the video for "Kill the Fun," which is the poppiest of her many break-up songs on the excellent new Last War.

Poliça

Channy Leaneagh dons a selection of mod wigs and dances behind a Samurai sword in this sexy new Poliça video (read the lyrics while you watch for the full effect). Find the track, "Raw Exit," on the band's Shulamith Deluxe release alongside a cover of Leslie Gore's "You Don't Own Me" and two other new songs.

Atmosphere

Atmosphere's Rhymesayers labelmate Blueprint conceptualized and directed this new video for the song "We Ain't Gonna Die Today," which stars his Columbus, Ohio pals Bobby Silver and DJ Rare Groove.

Reina del Cid

Ok, let's talk about Reina del Cid for a minute. You've probably seen her name on bills around town—she holds down a weekly residency at Amsterdam in addition to playing tons of other gigs—and wondered what she's all about. Well I'm going to let you in on a little intel: Reina and her band are one of the best-kept secrets in the Twin Cities. Her voice, her guitar playing, and her songwriting are all top-notch, and she's getting ready to share her talents with the rest of the Midwest with a short tour. This video offers a nice little front-row seat to Reina's world.

Astronautalis

If you follow Astronautalis on Twitter or Instagram, you may have noticed that he's always always on the move and always posting photos from amazing cities around the world. It's just part of who he is—and now his free spirit has been documented as part of a new series from Vimeo and Charles Schwab called "Why I Left." We may like to think of Astronautalis as a Minnesota artist (and it is currently where he collects his mail), but dude is married to the road.
