Cabooze to celebrate 40th anniversary with special series of shows

The Cabooze, a rock club that’s become a West Bank music institution, has announced plans to celebrate its 40th anniversary with a special series of concerts. Shows announced so far include Lamont Cranston and Friends, the Butanes Soul Revue, and a tribute to reggae legend Peter Tosh, among others.

The Cabooze opened in July 1974. The first musical act the young club hosted was the Friends Road Show: “a 13-member European troupe that combines rock and roll with mime, including jugglers, clowns, magicians and a fire eater.” In the ensuing years, the Cabooze has been a staple home for blues acts in Minnesota. Minnesota acts who have played at the Cabooze throughout its history include Bob Dylan, the Replacements, Atmosphere, Soul Asylum, the Suburbs, Trip Shakespeare, and the Lamont Cranston Band.

The club helped birth the Butanes Soul Revue in the late 1980s. In 1987 local R&B group the Butanes added a horn section and several extra vocalists for a Christmas set of “deep soul” at the Cabooze, which was successful enough to earn the expanded lineup a popular Wednesday night residency at the club, which they held for five years. The Butanes returned to the Cabooze in 2001 to record their album Day & Night during two shows—“one during the day, one during the night,” as the band’s website notes.

One highlight of the club’s history was a 1978 Peter Tosh show at which Mick Jagger and Keith Richards made an appearance. The two Rolling Stones reportedly climbed onstage but neglected to play anything.

The concert series will begin this month and run through December.
