Video: Jim McGuinn accepts Jeremy Messersmith’s Ice Bucket Challenge

by Jay Gabler

August 26, 2014

Sitting in a tub of ice, Minnesota singer-songwriter Jeremy Messersmith recently nominated the Current's program director Jim McGuinn to participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge—that is, to be doused in ice water to raise money and awareness to fight the disease ALS. (It's been a busy week for Jeremy—take a behind-the-scenes look at his recent appearance on Letterman.)

At MPR's Minnesota State Fair booth on Monday evening, Jim accepted Jeremy's challenge. After Jim spoke about the importance of fighting ALS—a disease that has taken the lives of so many, including musicians Charles Mingus and Leadbelly—producer Derrick Stevens and engineer Erik Stromstad hoisted a giant purple bucket over Jim's head.

For his part, Jim has nominated former Minneapolis mayor R.T. Rybak as well as Doomtree's Dessa to follow his icy act.
