Today’s Music News: All-star cast to perform Big Star’s ‘Third’ at First Avenue

An all-star group of musicians will perform a special orchestrated rendition of Big Star's 1978 album Third (later reissued as Sister Lovers) at First Avenue on Sept. 30. The musicians—including Big Star member Jody StephensMike Mills (R.E.M.), and Chris Stamey (the dB's)—first reconstructed the album's intricate arrangements in 2010, and have been performing the album at venues around the world.

Songwriter Wayne Carson has died at age 72. Carson was best-known for "Always On My Mind" - a hit for Elvis PresleyWillie Nelson, and the Pet Shop Boys - and "The Letter," a hit for the Box Tops (featuring Alex Chilton, later of Big Star) and Joe Cocker. (Rolling Stone)

The 19-year-old daughter of Kurt Cobain's friend Tony Poukkoula has discovered photographs of Nirvana's first show—which Poukkoula hosted in his basement. Maggie Poukkoula tweeted photos that showed her dad jamming with Nirvana on Led Zeppelin covers, only later to discover that the photos she'd found tucked inside her dad's books were in fact previously unseen shots of the band's first gig. Kurt Vile announced details about his new album, b'lieve i'm goin' down..., which will be released Sept. 25, and shared a video for album opener "Pretty Pimpin." (Pitchfork)

Miley Cyrus, who infamously twerked on Robin Thicke at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, has been announced as host of this year's VMAs. (Billboard) MTV also announced nominees for this year's awards, to be presented on Aug. 30. Leading the pack are Taylor SwiftEd Sheeran, and Beyoncé. Nuns who occupy a California convent are escalating their battle to keep pop star Katy Perry from buying the property and moving in. The nuns would prefer to see the convent sold to a local restaurateur, but the Los Angeles Archdiocese would prefer to accept Perry's generous cash offer, and asserts that it has the right to do so as legal owner of the property. The nuns are now saying that selling the convent to Perry would violate their vows, and continue to spar with the Archdiocese in court. (Billboard)
