Music News: Fans try to stream Nelly out of debt with ‘Hot in Herre’ marathons

by Staff

September 13, 2016

TMZ recently revealed that Nelly owes $2.4 million in federal and state taxes. SPIN reported the story with a headline based on the average Spotify payout for each song stream: "Nelly Needs At Least 287,176,547 'Hot In Herre' Streams to Pay Off His IRS Debt." The St. Louis rapper's supporters took it from there. Tracking their music marathons with the hashtag #SaveNelly, fans have been playing "Hot In Herre" again and again and again. (Mashable)

In other streaming news, the price of paid services could be dropping. The standard price for paid streaming services is about ten dollars a month, but $120 a year is substantially more than the average consumer has historically paid for music, and some industry experts think that dropping the monthly price could increase the number of paid subscribers. Amazon and Pandora are both expected to experiment with monthly subscriptions at price points potentially as low as five dollars. (New York Times)
