Friday Five: Eric Mayson, Cloud Cult, the Suburbs, and more new Minnesota music videos

by Andrea Swensson

September 11, 2015

Greetings, friends! It's Friday, which means we've survived a whole entire week of people talking about summer being over and how winter is upon us and we're all about to get very, very cold. Let's celebrate with a piping hot selection of local music videos, fresh from the oven...

Eric Mayson

There is so much to love about this new release from Eric Mayson, Detail. Those beautiful stacked vocal harmonies, that smoky organ, those whipsmart lyrics. "Byline" is just the tip of the iceberg; if you like what you hear, check out the whole album on SoundCloud.

Cloud Cult

Rather than keep the cameras trained on their band, Cloud Cult have placed the focus squarely on their fans with their new Stories from the Road series, produced by their production manager Jeff D. Johnson. In this episode, a mother from Memphis shares a powerful story about her son and the heartbreaking role Cloud Cult's song "Journey of the Featherless" played in their lives. It's a little over 13 minutes, and it's worth every second.

The Suburbs

Why yes that is the Suburbs' Chan Poling and Hugo Klaers making their own version of the iconic Laverne and Shirley opening credits! The Suburbs play Summit Brewery tomorrow as part of the annual Summit Backyard Bash.

Cover Me Impressed

Speaking of fun shows happening this weekend, here's a little preview of tomorrow's Cover Me Impressed, which is going down across town outside South Minneapolis's Harriet Brewing. Five bands will pay tribute to their favorite acts (like Trompe le Monde, who cover the Pixies, and Little Man, who will channel T. Rex), with all the proceeds benefiting the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota.

Longshot

Back in 2012, Chicago transplant MC Longshot was one of the finalists in Vita.mn's best-new-bands competition "Are You Local?" These days, he's keeping busy collaborating with artists like Dem Atlas (who appears on this song, "No Matter What") and working with the producer Young Diamond. Check out more of his recent work here.
