Today’s Music News: Fan returns Patti Smith’s stolen t-shirt, 36 years later

Patti Smith was at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois to talk about her new memoir when a fan named Noreen Bender walked up and handed Smith several items that had been stolen 36 years ago—possibly when a truck containing some of Smith's touring equipment was stolen in Chicago in 1979. Bender said a friend gave her the items—which included the shirt she wore on the cover of Rolling Stone in 1978—some years ago, and she's been waiting for the right opportunity to return them. Prince opened Paisley Park for a second night in a row on Thursday, this time for only a few dozen people who watched the star and his current band rehearse for about an hour and a half. (Star Tribune)

Judy Collins says that her longtime friend Joni Mitchell is recovering well from a brain aneurysm Mitchell suffered in March. "Joni is walking, talking, painting some, doing much rehab every day, and making good progress," wrote Collins on Facebook. (Billboard)

Warner Bros. has signed a contract to develop a production deal to turn a forthcoming book about the final weeks of Michael Jackson's life into a TV series. CMA Awards organizers have revealed that John Mellencamp will perform with Keith Urban at the awards' Nov. 4 ceremony. What song will they sing? The smart money's on Urban's hit "John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16." (Rolling Stone)

The Wall Street Journal reports that over a fifth of Spotify streams generate no revenue for songwriters, and that similar problems shortfalls other services such as YouTube and Google Play. Spotify says this is because they don't know how to find many songwriters, and organizations of rights-holders agree that the industry needs to develop a new system for reporting songwriter contact information to streaming services.

T.I. is continuing to apologize for saying that neither Hillary Clinton nor any other woman should be President. "My words WERE NOT meant to be taken so literally," he says in a Facebook post accompanied by a video in which he elaborates on his apology. (Billboard)
