Music News: Minnesota State Fair declares Prince tribute day

The Minnesota State Fair has announced that Friday, Aug. 26 will be a "Unite in Purple" day paying tribute to Prince. After 5 p.m., stages throughout the fairgrounds will feature Prince tributes, DJ Dudley D will spin tracks for a Prince party in Carousel Park, State Fair landmarks will be lit purple, and a Prince laser show will begin at 9:15 p.m.

Meanwhile, several thousand Prince fans have signed a petition asking President Barack Obama to declare Paisley Park a National Historic Landmark. "Paisley Park is a building and structure which possesses exceptional value in illustrating the heritage of the United States in artistic culture," reads the petition in part, "and possesses a high degree of integrity of location and setting."

Today's soundtrack reissue news

As a new season of Twin Peaks continues production, the original 1990 series soundtrack is being reissued with new liner notes by composer Angelo Badalamenti. The Sept. 9 reissue will include a "damn fine coffee" colored vinyl edition, and will be celebrated at some record stores with coffee-and-pie events. (Pitchfork)

The soundtrack to the 1983 film Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence will also be reissued, on Oct. 21. The film score was composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto, who co-starred in the film with David Bowie. (Pitchfork)
